Words from the Director
Dear Friends,
I am writing to announce my departure from The Hartt Community Division and the University of Hartford, effective in January 2010. My familiy will be relocating to Chicago where I will become President and CEO of the Music Institute of Chicago.
It has been a privilege to serve as Director of the Hartt Community Division and it is bittersweet to be leaving. Though it has been difficult to think about leaving the Community Division, the move to the Music Institute of Chicago is a professional and personal opportunity I simply cannot refuse.
The many relationships I have developed with Community Division faculty, staff, students and families have inspired me, motivated me, and warmed my heart. Thanks to all who have treated me so well. I truly believe in the Hartt Community Division, its excellence and its value to Greater Hartford.
The Community Division is moving in a very positive direction. Enrollment is up, in spite of a challenging economic climate. The quality of our faculty is unparalleled, customer service is improving and our students are achieving more than ever. The Community Division is truly engaged in the community fabric of Greater Hartford. Moreover, the Community Division is becoming fully integrated with The Hartt School and the University at large. Great things are clearly on the horizon.
Dean Flagg and I will work diligently and quickly to find the next director of the Hartt Community Division. My focus on the Hartt Community Division will be energetic and undivided until my January departure date. Until a new director is appointed, and as always, the day-to-day operations of the Community Division will be in the capable hands of associate director Alana Seddon.
I would like to thank President Walter Harrison, Provost Lynn Pasquerella, Dean Aaron Flagg and Alana Seddon for their ongoing support and encouragement. The University of Hartford will surely
have a strong advocate in Chicago.
Sincerely,
Mark George
Director, Hartt Community Division

The ABQ's rich history includes performances in Europe, Central and South America, the Middle East, Asia, Australia, and all fifty of the United States; a discography of more than fifty recordings; the premieres of more than one-hundred contemporary brass works, and in the last decade, mini-residencies that have brought the ABQ's chamber music expertise to countless young musicians and institutions worldwide. ABQ commissions by Samuel Adler, Bruce Adolphe, Daniel Asia, Jan Bach, Robert Beaser, William Bolcom, Elliott Carter, Jacob Druckman, Eric Ewazen, Anthony Plog, Huang Ruo, Steven Sacco, David Sampson, Gunther Schuller, William Schuman, Ralph Shapey, Joan Tower, Melinda Wagner, and Charles Whittenberg, are considered among the most significant contributions to the modern brass quintet repertoire. In the last three seasons the ABQ has premiered new works by Gordon Beeferman, Justin Dello Joio, Shafer Mahoney, David Sampson, and Grammy-winning composer-pianist Billy Childs, and released two new recordings: Cheer Boys Cheer (volume two of civil war brass music of the 26th NC Regimental Band and Jewels (ABQ concert favorites). In commemoration their 50th anniversary, the ABQ soon will release their eighth recording on the Summit label, a double CD of new works called The State of the Art-the ABQ at 50.
Equally committed to the promotion of brass chamber music through education, the American Brass Quintet has been in residence at The Juilliard School since 1987 and at the Aspen Music Festival since 1970. Hartt's Theater Division presents Shakespeare's Twelfth Night
The Hartt School's Theatre Division presents Twelfth Night, one of William Shakespeare's great comedies, Thursday, October 15, Friday, October 16, and Saturday, October 17 at 7:30 PM, and Sunday, October 18, at 3:00 PM. Performances are in the Edward C. and Ann T. Roberts Foundation Theater at the Mort and Irma Handel Performing Arts Center, 35 Westbourne Parkway, Hartford. Admission is $20 with discounts for seniors, students, and groups. For tickets and information, call the University of Hartford Box Office at 860.768.4228 or 800.274.8587, or buy tickets online at www.hartford.edu/hartt
For centuries audiences have loved Twelfth Night, a tale of love, jealousy, and mistaken identity. When Viola and her twin brother Sebastian are shipwrecked and separated, Viola dresses in her brother's clothes and becomes a page in the palace of the Duke of Orsino. Thinking Viola is a boy, the Duke sends her with a message to Olivia, whom he loves. A variety of complications are set into motion when Olivia falls in love with the page 'boy'.
Twelfth Night, with its great clarity, economy, and drive,is a perfect introduction to Shakespeare. According to Robert Davis, director, "The play is really designed for the audience to get caught up in the action. It is extremely accessible and probably the best play for someone who is new to Shakespeare; a great place to start a wonderful relationship with the world's greatest playwright!" Davis goes on to describe the play as hilarious. "It has, of course, Shakespeare's gorgeous poetic language but it's also filled with music, dance, and some wild and wacky slapstick comedy."
The show features third and fourth year actor training and music theatre students who hail from locations in Connecticut and as far away as Louisiana. Fourth year actor training majors include Sal Mitsou of Farmington, CT, as Orsino; Alec Shamas of Wichita, KS, as Antonio; Bob Sheire of Stafford, VA, as Malvolio; Nathan Johnson of Mattapan, MA, as Sir Andrew Ague; Shaylan Glejzer of Gilford, NH, as Olivia; Chelsea Farthing of Alliance, OH, as Viola; and April Glick of Fairfax, VA, as Maria. Fourth year music theatre majors include Seth Eliser of Saint Amani, LA, as Sebastian; Dan Cake of Kutztown, PA, as a sea captain; Nick Palazzo of Rocky Hill, CT, as Valentine; Pat Morrissey of Mound, MN, as Curio; Phil Smith of Granby, CT, as Sir Toby Belch; and Jamal Shuriah of Great Neck, NY, as Feste. Third year music theatre major Kevin Geiss of Carmel, CT, joins the cast as a servant/priest.

The Hartford Chorale ~ Open Rehearsal Invitation

Dear Choral Music Lovers,
It is with great pleasure that I invite you and any interested students to an open rehearsal of The Hartford Chorale conducted by Richard Coffey on October 26th from 7:00-10:00 P.M. at St. James's Episcopal Church located at 1018 Farmington Ave. in West Hartford.
As many of you may already be aware, The Hartford Chorale offers two FULL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS for high school and college students and a Continuing Education Unit program for music educators. These programs offer an opportunity for high school and college students over the age of 16 and music educators to learn and perform challenging choral repertoire and to perform with professional instrumental musicians. Under the programs, the interns will be mentored and their participation will be tracked by a senior member or the Chorale. At the end of each semester they also submit an evaluation designed to reflect their individual level and be eligible to receive credit from their educational institution. All efforts are made to avoid conflicts with school performances. We are very proud to have 3 high school interns and nine college students in our programs this year from several institutions.
The Chorale is the main symphonic chorus for The Hartford Symphony and performs regularly with the symphony at The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts. Our open rehearsal will feature Maestro Richard Coffey's preparation of the Chorale for our upcoming performances of the Brahms Requiem with The Hartford Symphony under the direction of visiting conductor, Maestro Constantine Kistopoulos on November 12, 13, 14 and 15, 2009. If you and/or your students have any questions or are interested in the programs and plan to attend, you are asked to R.S.V.P. to the Chorale Office with the number of guests at the.hartford.chorale@onecommail.com or 860 547-1982 by Monday Friday, October 23. Please feel free to forward this invitation to any of your colleagues and visit our website at: www.hartfordchorale.org for our full schedule and ticket information.
