Dance Intensive Program

Come Join a World of Artistry, Etiquette, Discipline, and Technique!

The Intensive Ballet Program is designed to take students interested in classical ballet from a foundation level to a pre-professional level, leading to a career in dance. Students study ballet between two and six days a week depending on their level and are introduced to other dance forms and body conditioning techniques, when appropriate, to enrich their understanding of dance styles and to give them the opportunity of a multifaceted choice of career in the field of dance. The Modern Theater Program requires a lighter commitment of time and energy and is open to students who are interested in a modern dance or theater career.

Carrying on the legacy of The School of The Hartford Ballet, The Community Division Dance Department provides training from the best professionals in the area in our state-of-the-art studios in Hartford. Students experience the lifelong benefits of ballet classes including strong self-esteem, good posture, physical and mental confidence, and health benefits associated with being physically active.

About the Intensive Program

The Intensive Program is designed for the serious dance student aged 8 - 19. All students begin with Foundation classes and gradually progress into higher level classes. Foundation classes prepare the young student (aged 8 - 10) for entry into the intensive program. No audition is required for participation in Foundation courses, and students may take other courses in the Community Division if so interested.

Ballet A-C, Ballet D-F, and Modern Dance D-F classes are open to students ages 9 and up. Placement classes are required for all new students (contact the dance department by email or call (860) 768 2495. Students enrolled in the Intensive program may take other classes within the Intensive Program upon approval of the Director, or courses within the General Program if they choose. Tuition information for Intensive and General Classes is available here.

Students in the Intensive Program are also eligible to participate in our Performance Ensembles. Rehearsals are held Saturdays 1:30 - 3:30 pm, and auditions are required (contact Amanda Kilpatrick, the Dance Administrator by email or call 860-768-2495.

Intensive Modern Theatre Dance Program

This 35 week program is for the student, with a basis in classical ballet, who has limitations to the number of day’s study he/she can commit, and wishes to follow a program of varied dance styles, leading to a future as a performing artist in modern, contemporary, or musical theatre dance techniques.

Students will continue to base their technique on classical ballet during the first year of study but once this is secure at an elementary level, their field of study will be widened to include Modern and Jazz body conditioning techniques, when appropriate, to enrich their understanding of dance styles and to give them the opportunity of a multifaceted choice of career in the field of dance.

With flexibility in course selection, these students may tailor the program to meet their dance goals. They have the opportunity to audition for the New Performance Ensemble at the beginning of the school year.

For more information and to schedule a placement class in either the Intensive Ballet or Contemporary Dance Programs, please contact Amanda Kilpatrick the Dance Department Administrator by email at dancedesk@hartford.edu or by calling (860) 768 6000.

All classes in the Intensive Modern Theatre Dance Program are held at the Mort & Irma Handel Performing Arts Center located at the corner of Albany Avenue and Westbourne parkway in Hartford.
