Hartt Middle School Band Institute 2009

A week-long workshop for middle school brass, woodwind and percussion students
entering grades 7-9 in Fall 2009.

About the Program
August 10-14, 2009

The Hartt Middle School Band Institute (HMSBI) is a week-long workshop for middle school brass, woodwind and percussion students. The program includes daily rehearsals in both the Concert Band and smaller ensembles, sectional rehearsals, and music classes.
The music classes cover  musicianship, ear training, improvisation or rhythm, drumming and movement.   Also scheduled are several faculty recital performances and assemblies for the students to attend. The week will culminate with a final concert on Friday afternoon followed by a reception for the students and their guests.

Eligibility

Students who are entering grades 7 - 9 in Fall 2009 are eligible to participate in HMSBI. Students should have played their instrument for two years and/or be able to play Major Scales up to two sharps and three flats, plus perform music at a middle school level.

Students entering grade 6 may be eligible with permission from the director. If unsure of ability, please contact the director, Susan Spaulding, for a consultation.

Daily Schedule

Each day begins with all students arriving at The Hartt School at 8:50am.  The first activity of the day is a full concert band rehearsal.  The morning and afternoon will be scheduled with faculty performances, sectional rehearsals, classes and small ensemble rehearsals.  An ample lunch break is provided and students should  bring a bag lunch and beverage each day.  The day will close with another full concert band rehearsal.  Students should be picked up at 5pm.

Performance Information

The week will close with a final concert involving all Hartt Middle School Band Institute participants.  The concert will begin at 3pm on Friday, August 14th.  The concert is free and all parents, family members and friends are encouraged to attend.  A reception for students and their guests will follow the concert.

No audition is necessary for the HMSBI but please note that a signature of a music instructor (private lesson teacher or band director) is required on the enclosed registration form.

Referral Discount:
Save up to 10%
Returning HMSBI students who refer a new student to the program will receive a 5%
discount on tuition (can be combined with the Early Registration Discount).
The New Student’s name must be filled out on the Registration Form to be eligible for the Referral discount. 

Registration confirmation and information sheets will be mailed after June 15th. Enrollment stays open for each instrument until the individual section is filled.
