Now offering a fully-comprehensive music program that combines the performing arts with summer fun!  Open to students with at least 2 years of experience on their instrument or voice, including flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, violin, viola, cello, bass, guitar, piano and voice.  Students will enjoy the intensity of direct study on their primary instrument along with the fun and enjoyment that comes from broadened musical exposure.  Other classes include music theory, song-writing, sight-singing, ear-training, plus chorus and instrumental ensembles depending upon your speciality.

Thanks to the success of our past programs, we are expanding summer programs for high school instrumental music students.  For those who are returning to Hartt this summer, don't worry; the programs of the past are still thriving and bringing you the excellence and enjoyment you've come to know:

• Middle School Clarinet Institute
  • Middle School Horn Institute
    • Middle School Trumpet Institute

Each morning, participants will meet with other students of the same instrument or voice for instruction specific to that instrument.  Professional faculty will gear activities for this age group and will include curricular content as follows:

• Basic Technique: tone, breathing, range, pitch accuracy, intonation, articulations, dynamic range, scales, fingerings, bowings, hand & body positioning, embouchure, etc.
• Reading Skills: rhythm patterns, note accuracy, key signatures, sight-reading, visual to sound connections and lots of practice
• Solo Playing: coaching on solo preparation, mock auditions, audition techniques, tone and sound production specific to solo playing
• Ensemble Playing:  independent part playing in two to four part ensemble music focusing on an introduction to small ensemble playing skills and musical independence

For the afternoon, students will participate in activities with all other participants, including singing, music theory, song-writing, ensembles including instrumental and choral options, activities, etc.
